Saskilla – Godson of Grime
Saskilla’s highly anticipated powerhouse Grime album ‘Godson of Grime’ is finally here and features thirteen heavyweight Grime/Trap bangers with some big MC’s featuring. With single like Forever featuring Godfather of Grime Wiley, to Grime In USA with 3i Joe from Los Angeles, this mixtape is rich in passion and big sounds of Grime music. From the first track, ‘Forever’, Saskilla states his commitment to the scene. With Grime music and acts like Boy Better Know being recognised in the USA by the likes of Drake and Kanye West, Saskilla teams up with LA’s 3i Joe on ‘Grime In USA’, both showing love for UK and Grime. Japan can’t be forgotten as a big representer of the scene, and ‘Grime In Japan’ features Canadian Grime MC Tre Mission, Manga and Wiley. A massive line up of elite MC’s, the four decimate a bass-riddled Grime-come-Trap beat with energetic flows, expressing that no matter where they are at, they’re attitude is fully grime. Saskilla is full of braggadocio on tracks like ‘Falaraki’ and the self-titled ‘Saskilla’, the latter having some clever wordplay from Saskilla that put emphasis on him being so ahead of his time and competition. Saskilla teams up with his brother Jamkvy on ‘Werk’, a work out UK anthem for 2016, the lyrics focusing on their unparalleled skills and high work rate. Saskilla includes some controversial tracks on the album, ‘N.F.T.R’ which was released in the wake of his interview on the radio station, answering unanswered questions from the interview which was designed to show himself and the Grime scene in a bad light. Also on the album is Saskilla’s heated diss towards Chip from the Chip Vs Bugzy Malone feud. Two tracks that stand out for difference in style are ‘I Hate Mondays’, a fusion of Bassline, Garage and Grime in one, with Saskilla expressing his hate or Monday’s, the start of the week. ‘Lullabies’ is a deep, up-tempo but more mellow grime track from Saskilla featuring a female vocalist bringing some soulful, throwback vocals to the UK Garage on the hook. Saskilla takes you back to where it all started in his humble beginnings, as he spits rapidly about girls and relationships, and the track depicts the fallout.
This is a fantastic Grime album, possibly already a shoe in for Grime album of the year in my opinion. The project is injected with Saskilla’s love and passion for the Grime scene that he represents to the fullest. The up-tempo production on the album also brings out the best and most insanely rapid and innovative flows from Saskilla too, and his lyrical capabilities are in no doubt too, as he covers a range of topics.
