ThisisDA – control, shift (Prod. by Jakuta)
Bristol-based Hip Hop artists ThisisDA is set to release his new single ‘control, shift’ on April 11th, which follows the success of his first two EP releases, “Based Off Black” and “21 And Done”, which garnered attention and support from i-D, MOBO Awards Group and NTS Radio.
‘control, shift’ is produced by ThisisDA’s friend and producer Jakuta, and is a Jazz-influenced Hip Hop beat featuring relaxed delivery and flows from the lyricist, whose rhymes philosophically explore “police brutality, introspection and the human experience as a whole”. There is a coming together of immense talents for the quality instrumentation and vocals on this track, featuring a vintage guitar and a smooth clarinet on the intro, the latter played by Luke Eira, a busker ThisisDA discovered in Bristol, adds depth and texture to the beautiful sounds on the song. Fenne Lily provides harmonious background vocals on the second chorus, and 17-Year Old Gaidaa is ever-soulful on the outro melody. ThisisDA explains of Gaidaa that she “can sing from the soul like no other”.
Speaking on how the track came together, ThisisDA explains, “I was at my boy Jakuta’s place… He played the track and it was exactly the sound I was looking for at the time. I sat with him whilst he continued producing, and structured/arranged it how I requested. His Logic started playing up and the keyboard shortcuts weren’t working – said it’s never happened to him before. That’s when the words “control shift” popped into my head – but as a double entendre kinda thing.”
ThisisDA has already caught the attention of both national and international industry heads, including BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens who included him in his “Best of BBC Introducing” playlist. Phil Taggart named him as one of his “Future Firsts” and Annie Mac featured him on her “FMM” playlist. ThisisDA also collaborated with established artists Blu and Lex Records signee, Eyedress.
The Bristol rapper supported Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Akala, OG Maco and Grandmaster Flash, with NTS Radio having him on a joint headline gig with fast-rising wordsmith Kojey Radical. ThisisDA is also versatile, having takien part in a live session for BBC 6 Music’s Tom Robinson where he performed alongside the Hip Hop collective Sumo Chief.
With his unique sound that blends Hip Hop and Jazz, ThisisDA is a refreshing artist to emerge from the UK Hip Hop scene so far in 2017, and with new single ‘Control, Shift’ dropping 11th April, ThisIsDA will certainly be an artist to watch out for this year.
