One Take Freestyle – The Remixes Part 2
Following on from the collation of the best One Take Freestyles to come out in recent weeks and the past month, I decided to check out some of the One Take Freestyles on soundcloud, and here are some of the best and my personal favourite One Take Freestyles, with the likes of Isaiah Dreads, Grizzly, Izzie Gibbs and Villain of Invasion Alert dropping their freestyles over Ghetts’ and Rude Kid’s One Take instrumental, which chops and refixes Wiley’s classic ‘Wot Do U Call It’, giving it a new lease of life with deeper bass and up-tempo, energetic claps and snares. So without further ado . . .
South Londoner Grizzly too to soundcloud to release his own One Take Freestyle this past couple of days. Grizzly made light work of it, claiming it was just a quick ting, proceeding to drop heavyweight bars in which he goes on wicked and bad, delivering a torrent of punchlines and warning certain man to keep calm as he is ready to beef any MC. Grizzly displays excellent delivery as he mixes in Jamaican Patois too.
Just the same as Grizzly, Northampton MC and Dice Recordings artist Izzie Gibbs steams in with aggressive delivery on his own freestyle, calling out and attacking fake road man, challenging any MC claiming he can light them. Izzie Gibbs, like Grizzly too, showcases clever wordplay, and both name check a few other Grime artists. Grizzly states he is bad to the bone like D Double E and mentioning Row D as he employs double entendres. Izzie name checks Ice Kid as well as flipping Ghetts and Rude Kid’s #SixFiveThree to state he grinds 365.
Two MC’s in particular convey dedication to their craft, that is Isaiah Dreads and East London MC Streakz. Isaiah also displays rapid and skippy flows, emphasizing his work rate, and both he and Streakz convey confidence, no holding back and boldly affirming that they are dissimilar and superior with their skills to the competition. Streakz states that he has a winners mentality and feels that his time is coming up, and promotes positivity by also criticizing MC’s that are hyping up and telling lies about what they done did.
Another MC that slipped under my radar and sounds like a promising talent for the future is Sneeke Da General, who also stressed that he is is perfecting his craft. Sneeke displays stop and start flows as he effortlessly alternates speeds and is remarkably fast-paced. Sneeke boldly tells certain man to stay in their lane as he takes the opportunity to turn the One Take Freestyle in to a war dub or sorts. Sneeke also rains down clever punchlines on the track.
“A Falcon In This Music Ting”. That is what Jawdz F.Star compares himself to in his One Take Freestyle, stating he wants to “ . . . aeroplane, no Heathrow”. Jawdz and SoBow/Invasion Alert MC Villain deliver the more hard-edged lyrics in this collection, with one of Villain’s stand out lines being “Make the strap turn Hannibal and lick him”. Villain pays homage to some classic UKG bars and throws in his own trademark bars too. Jawdz is excellent with the flow and delivery, spraying rapidly with stuttering flows. Both MC’s, whilst shelling the beat with what you could call road bars especially in Villain’s case, they both come with clever wordplay.
Once again, this is a varied collection with differing styles and lyrical content, nevertheless, each and every MC deliver the fire over Rude Kid’s incredible collection. As more and more MC’s release their own #OneTakeFreestyle, it elevates the Grime Scene in popularity. We are claiming our own genre of Grime and pushing it out to the masses, showing the US Hip Hop community our originality, as well as creating healthy competition as each artist raises the bar. Ghetts and Rude Kid definitely without a doubt deserve to win a MOBO this year for track of the year, even though it was technically released last year.
