Staxxy – Grind Time (mixtape)

Derby Hip Hop Lyricist Staxxy is back with a brand new album called ‘Grind Time’. One of the main themes on this new mixtape from Staxxy is the grind as the title suggests, with the rapper taking you on a gritty journey of his life, yet it’s a reality check, giving you his own experiences.

The mixtape opens with ‘Find My Way’ featuring Defkon1 whom delivers hoarse singing vocals over the ambient Hip Hop production. Staxxy rhymes about finding his feet in the game, scrutinizing his critics, and expresses his desires to make a better life for him and his family.

Staxxy takes you on to the second track called ‘Ambition As A Rider’, a tribute to 2Pac, which starts off the focus on Staxxy’s constant grind. Staxxy spits on a boom bap instrumental doused with heavenly yet chilling background vocal singing, as he gives the listener a piece of his life story, beginning with his growing up and fending for himself, and he tells of the gritty road ways, conveying his ambition for the grind and expressing his loyalty for his own squad. ‘GTOD’ or Get This Or Die is another song based on the grind, with Staxxy rhyming about the ambition for pushing to get what he wants at all costs. Staxxy teams up with LC on a hard hitting Hip Hop beat for ‘Grind More’, in which he rhymes about his money getting mentality, only thinking of the grind which includes music, doing what he can to make it, with LC also emphasizing the urgency to make money rather than complain of being broke, and to make the most of your time.

Staxxy also gives the listener an array of chilled tracks, in which he takes a break from the grind to relieve the stress. ‘Chill’ is one featuring a laid back Hip Hop beat, which Staxxy counters with chilled flows to complement the beat. The lyrics from Staxxy resonate with those looking to chill, from ladies to men, and even couples, as Staxxy rhymes about having his girl over even if his guys are her friends are there, just wanting to relax. Staxxy delivers quite a good, catchy hook here. In contrast, ‘Me N My Bros’ has Staxxy banish all women from his life that gossip or create hostility, with a straight bros no hos attitude, Staxxy expresses the choosing to get money over bxtches. Once again, ‘One Day’ featuring Avnt Garde is another stress relieving track from Staxxy, as he rhymes about freeing the stress of a weekend, yet still hoping for change in his life. Avnt Garde spits about weekly stresses of work, feeling like he is not earning enough for his big dreams. Both lay down laid back, free flowing flows on the kicking beat.

‘From Year 95’ features inspirational lyrics from Staxxy on a Trap style production, as he represents for the listeners and struggler’s, as he motivates them to keep pursuing their dreams, whilst ‘In Due Time’ is a reminder to keep up in hard times. This one features fantastic, amazing vocalizing from Lana on the chorus. ‘Humble Beginnings’ takes you on a journey back to a time in Staxxy’s life when he may have been living in rough with not much hope supposedly, except dreams and aspirations, yet it has made him more determined to win, never looking back and to not go back to those times.

Staxxy gives you his own life in lyrics on this mixtape, being straight up about his feeling towards some people, expressing his loyalty for others, and the grind of everyday transcends in to Staxxy’s desire and determination to achieve his music aspirations, the determination also seeping in to his delivery which he puts conviction in to. Staxxy’s lyrics are real and gritty, yet his musical skills from his rhyming to his flows, song writing and craft are polished and improving all the time.
